New racing shells find a home at the BRC

Earlier this year we added two new singles and three doubles to the BRC boathouse. The additions were made possible by a generous grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF), an agency of the Government of Ontario, and one of Canada’s leading granting foundations.

This shift to smaller boats was necessary as the national rowing program focuses more on skills training. Little did we know that the emergence of COVID-19 would make additions even more critical to our athletes’ success. The smaller boats enabled a safe return to training as larger boats would not have enabled safe distancing.

With more small boats, our athletes and summer program were able to return to the river. In them, they have learned valuable boatmanship skills and developed as rowers.

In “normal times,” these boats would have been properly celebrated with a boat christening. However, COVID-19 restrictions put a damper on our plans. Such celebrations will have to wait, but we’ve still decked the new boats out in style!
