Competitive Rowing

What is Competitive Rowing?

Our Competitive Rowing Program is designed for rowers who want to pursue, or continue to pursue, a higher standard of training and racing with the Brockville Rowing Club and/or it's High-School Rowing Associations.

The main goals of our Competitive Rowing Program are to build upon existing sport specific skills, and develop the athletic ability required to compete and perform at higher levels of competition. This is done in a supportive environment of like-minded individuals who want rowing to be a primary sport.

This program runs year round, with club rowing in the Summer, Autumn, and Winter, and high-school rowing in the Spring. Race opportunities are decided by age appropriate opportunities as well as rowing ability.

"We provide everything, but the guts!"

We train to race against other clubs and high-schools from all over North America.

Access to our world-class weight room, and the opportunity to learn how to strength train.

COMMUNITY

To us, the BRC is more than just a rowing club. We strive to create a community where anyone is welcome, and everyone works hard for their team.

We've had thousands of alumni go through our program and have been a part of the Brockville and Surrounding Area for over 130 years.

Here, you learn more than just how to do a sport. You learn how to succeed outside of the four walls at the BRC.

OPPORTUNITY

The Alumni of the BRC's Competitive Program have gone on to do some pretty incredible things.

From national champions with the BRC, to Olympic Medalists for Canada.

From local high-schools, to Ivy League Universities.

The main age group for the BRC's Competitive Rowing Program is 14 (Grade 9) and up. Competitive Rowing is typically split into the following categories:

U17, U19, U23, and Senior

In some cases, there are events for U15 and U13 athletes. However, athletes in this age group are better suited for our Development Rowing Program.

Depending on the cicumstance, athletes entering Grade 9 may be able to join the Competitive Program.

Our Competitive Program trains up to six days per week, and has up to 12 training sessions each week (twice per day), depending on the week and training program.

Practices are typically held each weekday morning before school, and again after school, with another session on Saturday morning.

Weekend travel is required for racing opportunities.

If an athlete can't make every practice, we understand. However, depending on the circumstance attendance will play a role when it comes to Travel Team selection.

For our younger competitive athletes (Grade 9/10) it's understandable that there are other sports and activities to keep you busy. For the older competitive athletes (Grade 11 +), it's expected that you attend practice consistently to set a positive example for the rest of the club.

It's important to understand that rowing is a team sport. If an athlete is put in a crew and then doesn't attend practice, it negatively impacts several other crew members as they won't be able to row.

In situations like this, they are handled on a case-by-case basis. Depending on the time of year, it may be more intuitive to join our Competitive Program at specific times than others.

For example, in the winter we are indoors, which makes joining much easier. Whereas in the middle of spring/summer, interested athletes may be encouraged to join our Development Program for an all around better experience on learning how to row.
